"Spectacular and Unique Lakes" Plitvicka Jezera National Park by travelmad478

Quite a few people recommended a visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park. We added it to our itinerary, not knowing exactly what we were going to see, but grateful to get a break from wandering around the streets of one medieval town after another on the southern coast! A day in the woods seemed like just the thing.

When we got to the park, I was amazed by a lot of things. First of all, despite the fact that the park itself was a key battleground in the Croatian civil war barely a decade ago, it's been totally restored and the facilities rebuilt to a very high standard. Second, I was quite surprised to see just how many tourists there were at the park, including seemingly hundreds of motorcycle-riding Germans and Austrians who were swarming the picnic areas in huge, leather-clad packs. But most stunning was the park's main attraction, the lakes themselves. I'd be surprised if there were anyplace else in the world like it--water so clear that you can see fish swimming ten feet below the surface, lush green mosses dripping over the edges of waterfalls, and one azure lake spilling into the next down chains of maze-like streams. If you're anywhere in the area, this park is a must-see.

You also shouldn't stray of the paths in case you step on a landmine of which the are loads left lying around after the war!

You were so lucky to have an Olympus camera! I had to break that last rule as well as I had only Cannon on me ;-)

Excellent, quite unusual page! Is it allowed to stick your toe in the water?
