In July 2003, I took the car ferry from Ullapool, on the west coast of Scotland, to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. I drove around Lewis and Harris for a few days, taking in the island's unique and lovely landscapes.
My route around Lewis ran as follows: I arrived in the early morning in Stornoway, drove via Barabhas to Port Nis and the "Butt of Lewis," then backtracked down the west side of the island to reach Carloway and Callanish. From there, I drove west to the Uig peninsula and stayed at a B&B near Timsgearraidh. The next morning I drove to the end of the road stretching southward along the edge of the Uig peninsula, then returned and drove back across the center of the island toward Luirbost. From there, I turned south and took a short spin around the Pairc peninsula before continuing on through the mountain passes to Tarbert. By this time, I was in the southern half of the island, called Harris. I drove in a counter-clockwise circle around South Harris, taking in the spectacular beaches of Losgaintir, and then back to Tarbert along the rocky eastern side of the island. That night, I took the ferry from Tarbert to the Isle of Skye.

Those beaches are stunning. Shame it's too cold for swimming!!! I love sheep wandering on beaches. They often come and rub against the motorhome when we are camping on beaches.
WOW!! A B&B for $40 or less in Europe. I must put this on my itinerary for my next trip to Europe.
Fantastic pictures and great tips as always!!! Loved the standing stone circles picture as well as the pretty opening picture!!!
Great pictures! I stayed one week on South Uist last year. I also took a daytrip to Lewis/Harris, but caught an awful day -- it just wouldn't stop raining :-( DEPRESSING!
