On a business trip to South Africa in September 2003, I found myself with a weekend to spare. Rather than spending it in the Sandton City shopping mall near Johannesburg, I opted to do a quick trip to Victoria Falls. I flew out from Johannesburg on Saturday morning and returned on Sunday afternoon. All in all, we had about 26 hours on the ground, but managed to maximize the fun-seeking opportunities while there!

This was my second trip to Zimbabwe (the first was in June 2001), and I was anxious to get to Vic Falls before the country's economy collapsed entirely. As it was, things appeared noticeably worse in 2003 than they had before, with vehicles scarce due to petrol shortages, tourists very thin on the ground even in the most heavily-promoted areas of the country, and an air of near-desperation prevalent. It is truly tragic to see how low this beautiful country has fallen, all as a result of politics: the productive economy, the tourist trade, and the wildlife and natural lands conservation have all been devastated. Even if everything suddenly starts going right in Zimbabwe--not likely under the current political regime--it will take decades to build this country back to where it was just a few years ago.
