El Bahia Palace: Bahia Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Bahia Palace, built in the late 19th century, is a superb example of Moroccan-Islamic architecture. The layout of the complex, with its courtyards and mazes of rooms, is typical of the style. The palace has been well restored and maintained, and its gorgeous tiles and carvings are quite impressive.

El Bahia Palace: Doorways of Bahia Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the most pleasing design features of this palace is the views it gives from one space into another. Often, you can stand in one spot and have your eyes drawn through several perfectly-placed doorways that frame an architectural feature beyond.

    Street Scenes: Streets of Marrakesh
  • Tip Rating:
  • It's easy to get a little lost on the streets of Marrakesh, since signs in English or French are few and far between. But don't worry: the city's not big enough to get too lost, and while you're wandering you'll see so many fascinating sights and interesting people that you won't have time to get nervous.

El Badi Palace: El Badi Palace ruin
  • Tip Rating:
  • This palace, built in the late 16th century, was an immense and sumptuous place in its day. Very sadly, it was demolished about a century later when another sultan decided to use its materials to build another palace in the city of Meknes. Only the outer walls and grounds remain, with just enough detail left of the pools and fountains to let you imagine what this place might have looked like in its heyday.

El Badi Palace: El Badi storks
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the sights at El Badi palace is the storks that make huge nests on top of its walls. Look up!

Djamaa El Fna - Square: The center of everything: Jemaa-al-Fnaa Square
  • Tip Rating:
  • You cannot miss this square, which lies smack in the middle of Marrakesh's old city (also known as the medina). If you ever get lost, just keep asking people to point you toward it, and you'll eventually be able to find yourself here. During the day, the square is relatively empty, with a scattering of vendors selling all sorts of goods. But at night, this place really wakes up. Packed with people and stalls that only get put up at night, it's the hub of social activity in Marrakesh.

Djamaa El Fna - Square: Jemaa-al-Fnaa setting up for the night
  • Tip Rating:
  • Jemaa-al-Fnaa starts to transform itself in the late afternoon, when the the food stalls are beginning to fill up the expanse that sits mostly empty during the day.

Things To Do: Jewish Cemetery (MIaara)
  • Tip Rating:
  • This one is slightly off the beaten path, but my friend Janet and I happened to be passing by this cemetery, so as Jews we decided it would only be right to pay a visit. The cemetery is a large expanse of tombs, all above ground, that hold the remains of what once was a pretty substantial Jewish population in the city. We poked around for about a half-hour, looking at the inscriptions and getting a spiel from one of the caretakers. (As for everything in Marrakesh, we were strongly encouraged to tip generously for this.)

These days, there are fewer Jews in Marrakesh, but enough that a section of the medina is still called the Jewish quarter.

Majorelle Gardens: Majorelle Gardens - a small, cool jewel
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Majorelle Gardens are planted with all sorts of trees, flowers, and shrubs arranged in sections around pools, fountains, and small structures. This garden won't take too long to walk around, but it's worth a stop for two reasons: first, it's lovely, and second, there's an excellent small museum located inside. The museum has paintings and photographs by the garden's creator, Jacques Majorelle, as well as a really nice collection of art and handicrafts from around Morocco. The tribal pieces are especially interesting.

Mederssa Ben Youssef: Medersa Ben Youssef
  • Tip Rating:
  • Built in the 16th century, this complex housed a school/university and contains classrooms, galleries, and dormitory rooms set around its courtyards. Much of the architecture here reminded me of the Alhambra in Spain, which was constructed around the same time. The carving around doorways, columns, and upper walls is spectacular.

Such lovely pics of Marrakesh and Capetown - i haven't seen the rest yet ;p. Marrakesh reminded me a bit of Damascus, Syria [pics I haven't put up yet] but I'm sure it's different ;) Greetings from the equator!
