Restaurant Name: Carlota
This award-winning restaurant is small but fantastic. The chef, Carla Pernambuco, trained in New York and brought some of the great fusion traditions back to São Paulo with her. Make a reservation!

Restaurant Name: Figueira Rubaiyat
A massive fig tree, the largest I've ever seen, is the centerpiece of this restaurant. Tables in an outdoor courtyard (don't worry, it's covered and heated in winter!) surround the immense tree, and you eat under its spreading branches. The vaguely Mediterranean food is very tasty, with grilled meat and fish the specialty. I had my 36th birthday dinner here, and the dulce de leche cake they gave me was a showstopper.

Restaurant Name: Rascal Pizza & Cozinha
I went to this restaurant in 1997, but I remember it like it was yesterday. Rascal is a chain of restaurants, with several outlets in upscale shopping malls and one in the Paulista neighborhood. The pasta, which is homemade, is outstanding, and the salad bar is a religious experience.
