The first few times I went to Delhi, it drove me crazy. Delhi is an huge city, where it takes hours to get from one side to the other and there are not a lot of sights you can see on foot. Spending hours in the car, I would get a blinding headache from the choking pollution within a day of arriving here. Street crime, not much of a problem in other parts of India, can be a danger on the thinly populated, broad streets outside the city center. And the summer heat in Delhi is truly brutal.
But in my last trip, I had to admit that Delhi was growing on me, just a bit. A major push to clean the city's air via incentives for CNG-powered vehicles has really improved matters. (The yellow-and-green three-wheeler shown in this picture is one of these environmentally friendly vehicles.) I walked around for a whole day in temperate February--dodging a few snarling dogs and beggars, true, but getting a good feel for the street in the process. And I found a few oases of cleanliness, quiet, beauty, and calm--not something Indian cities are known for. I might just have to re-think my Delhi attitude.

I am sure you will find a HUGE improvement in Delhi-The metro system surpasses any other in the world.
I'm glad to hear that Delhi is starting to get some environmentally friendly vehicles and that the air pollution has abated somewhat. I may have to go there at some point, and wasn't exactly looking forward to it.
So did you travel on this jumbo too?!!! It is pretty environment friendly too!!! Although a bit slow, it gives a better view from the top!!! And no one will dare to come in it's way!!! Hahaha!!!
Kandahar, at the Intercontinental is also very good. Bukhhara, probably the best, seats you on horrific little stools that rock back and forth.

Interesting tips!
My cousin said the same thing about India....it took some getting used to. He said that on his first visit, he was afraid to drink anything except the beer. :) Sounds like rationalization to me.
