At night the colosseum sleeps, the crowds disappear and you can admire the building in a whole different light - street light. It seems that floodlights are not used, so I was very surprised to get a decent night-time photo like this, especially as I had no tripod!

Ahh, unique about this is the feeling of being a sardine crammed into a can. If there was a busier place in Rome, I did not find it. Expect to be nudged, jostled and also expect to be annoyed at the amount of people in the Sistine Chapel who ignore the requests to keep quiet, and who take flash photos regardless! This picture is the oddity that sits in one of the gardens (the name of which escapes me), and as you can see, is not of Roman Empire origins!

You can go half-way by lift, then walk the rest. Views are fantastic - you can spot most of the Rome landmarks (if you recognise the spires) on a clear day, and of course, there's a great view over St Peter's square (which, ironically, is round).
