Off The Beaten Path: Azraq fortress

  • Azraq is a dull town east of Amman, not far from the Iraqi border. There is an impressive old fortress, made of dark stone. It was built about 1600 years ago. Last century Lord Lawrence Headquarters were based here. It is now much ruined and it's not worth to travel 'til here for it, unless you're a fanatic of old ruined fortresses. (I am not, but I did it anyway...)

  • The Wadi al Mujib is a deep (about 1000 mt) canyon on the national road going south from Amman to El Kerak, a few kms after Madaba. The views are really breathtaking and the road goes down and then up again steep and with very sharp windings. At the bottom of the Wadi the temperature is some 15 C higher than at the top and it's very quiet. There is no village or anything, except for a post office in the middle of nothing (?!?).

  • Mt Nebo Franciscan Monastery is located about 10 Km from Madaba on the top of a mountain overlooking the river Jordan valley and the Dead Sea.
Views are terrific and you can even see Jerusalem buildings far away. The Franciscan Monastery itself is a modern building and is closed to tourists, but there are some nice Roman mosaics to be seen.
There is no public transportation to Mt. Nebo, so you need to find a lift or catch a taxi. If you're fit you can then walk down from Mt. Nebo to the Dead sea (about 25 kms).

  • The Roman mosaics in the Mt. Nebo Franciscan are similar in style to the ones in neighbouring Madaba. The largest one is almost 10 meters wide and represents some hunting scenes. You can understand how green and lush this area was 2000 years ago.

  • From the Mt. Nebo Franciscan Monastery you can walk down to the Dead Sea. It's a long walk (about 25 kms) through some terrific landscapes. No real path to follow: just head down towards the Dead Sea. Keep always track of where the main road is: if you're tired you can try to find a lift. Take care of some aggressive stray dogs around. There are no villages along the way, so bring enough water with you.
