Tavira is a quiet town in eastern Algarve, on the southern coast of Portugal, not far from the spanish border. As there is no beach in Tavira town (the sea is 2 kms away), most tourists stay on the island just offshore (Ilha de Tavira) or travel further west to Faro and the most famous Algarve spots.
Tavira is still a quiet town, not too touristy, with a relaxed Portuguese atmosphere. It is relatively large (about 20000 inhabitants) and there are many interesting churches and buildings. A few Kms east of town there are some long nice beaches that are never too crowded.
