It is difficult to describe Petra: you must be there to feel the atmosphere of this unique place. It's a 2000 years old city whose buildings are all carved in the reddish stone of the steep rocky mountains. After the Nabateans and the Romans, the city remained a secret until last century, when it was discovered. Access to the city is possible only through a small (a few meters wide), long (3 Km) passage through the high rocks. Beduins still lived in the caves until a few decades ago, but now the city is entirely a large tourist spot. It takes at least three days to see eveything, but in two days you'll be able to visit all the most interesting sites: the Khazneh (the treasury), the theater, the colonnaded street, the King tombs, the high place of sacrifice, the Ad-Deir (the Monastery). This is the place where the final scene of "Indiana Jones and the last Crusade" was filmed. |
