Nakhon Pathom is a provincial capital just 55 kms west of Bangkok.
It is said to be the oldest city in Thailand: it was the center of the Dvaravati Kingdom in the 6th century, but it was probably inhabited even in the B.C centuries, when it was under the influence of India.
Unfortunately not so much is left from the glorious past: the main (and only) attraction in town is the famous Phra Pathom Chedi, that is one of the largest, oldest and more important buddhist monuments in the whole world, definitely worth a one day visit.
