It's really amazing to just walk around in this place. Everywhere you look is beautiful. Every street, every alley, every building is worthy of a photograph, but I think in Venice more so than anywhere else beauty is skin deep. You only have to spend a few days there to begin wondering what life is like in this tiny island. You begin to realize that the simplest things become feats of engineering in Venice. Venice is facing serious issues, among them pollution, depopulation, deterioration, and higher tides. At one point Venice was the gem of the Adriatic, a virtual mammoth of commerce; a cultural crossroads and a maritime power now Venice is loosing political ground over the Veneto region, faces continual depopulation as people seek better jobs and less arduous living conditions, is deteriorating rapidly and there are no set plans to clean the canals or stop the flooding. The facades of the building are falling apart, we had to take a detour several times as firemen hammered away at walls that would otherwise fall on passerby's. People seeking to make repairs on their unleveled, sinking homes have to pull a rotting pinewood forest through their floors and replace then replace it. In fact every construction job in Venice is an arduous, costly endeavor. Even things we take for granted, like bringing a new refrigerator home turn into labor intensive projects. Many are concerned that Venice is turning into a museum town; a theme park for tourists looking to be wowed. Everyday more Venicians leave in search of terra firma and Venice as a real working city is vanishing. As it is it's difficult to find a grocery store in Venice and many are now shopping on the mainland.
