Restaurant Name: Trattoria Ca' D' Oro

The restaurant is definitely not a tourist hangout and when you walk through the door it's apparent that this place specializes in food and not eye candy. Missing are the vistas of the Grand Canal but what you get in return is definitely worth the visit--traditional Venetian home cooking. There are no menus per se so you have to sort of wing it. If you understand a little Italian it will help when the waitress tells you the specials.

Favorite Dish: In Venice the food is expensive but the price is not directly related to the quality of the meal or the service. There are very few places where you can have a really good meal and good service for a moderate price and by the time you find those places [they are usually tucked away in tiny streets off the main tourist traps] you're already leaving. One of those places was the Trattoria Ca' d' Oro where we had an exquisite lunch consisting of fried artichokes [a local favorite], grilled vegetables, a delectable red bean soup, artichoke lasagna, sweet wine and assorted desserts for under $20 a person. Their red house wine was really great. That's something else tourists don't know about: You can show up to virtually any restaurant or grocery store with your own container and ask them to fill it up with their house wine [which is usually really tasty.]
