Skofja Loka is the one-thousand year old town, about 25 km northwest of the capital Ljubljana in Gorenjska region. This old town is located at the confluence of the Selska Sora and the Poljanska Sora Rivers.
The beginnings of the town, date back to 983. The Bishops of Freising, who ruled the Skofja Loka region, made impact on the town. (the name Skofja - bishop) The abundant cultural heritage set in beautiful natural surroundings, gave the town its nickname - "the Gallery in Nature". The picturasque facades of the houses gave it another nickname "Colourful Loka"
Skofja Loka today pleasantly combines a thousand years of tradition with a modern touch. In recent times there has been substantial development of the textile, wood and machine industries, but this has been deliberately kept to the outskirts of the town.

I was in Škofja Loka a few weeks ago and your page reminds me of this fascinating town! Great travelogues!
I'm getting a bit of Slovenian culture from a Paulo Coelho book I'm reading but your tips go in such rich detail. Pretty pictures as well++
What a great collection of architecure .. and wonderful castle. Old crafts, beautiful landscape, and a shady spot to rest... all good. Thanks for the tour.
Skofja Loka is a Slovenian jewel indeed. Due to its long history there are very unique buildings which can be admired also today. You found very nice views Thank you Olga.
not a town iknow - i guess i should.
an interesting page and a great castle, Olga ! It is strange to hear, it once belonged to Freising in Bavaria !
Hi, Slovenia sure is a beautiful place as we found out Easter 2007. We had no time for Skofja Loka though, which is a pity after I read through your pages. Ljubljana is one of the nicest capitals I have seen so far, more like a cozy rural village.
Excellent travelogues. Really enjoyed your step-by-step descriptions. What an enjoyable page to read and to see. Outstanding photographs.
Zelo lepo mesto!
