Skofja Loka is the one-thousand year old town, about 25 km northwest of the capital Ljubljana in Gorenjska region. This old town is located at the confluence of the Selska Sora and the Poljanska Sora Rivers.
The beginnings of the town, date back to 983. The Bishops of Freising, who ruled the Skofja Loka region, made impact on the town. (the name Skofja - bishop) The abundant cultural heritage set in beautiful natural surroundings, gave the town its nickname - "the Gallery in Nature". The picturasque facades of the houses gave it another nickname "Colourful Loka"
Skofja Loka today pleasantly combines a thousand years of tradition with a modern touch. In recent times there has been substantial development of the textile, wood and machine industries, but this has been deliberately kept to the outskirts of the town. |
