Getting TO/AROUND: One of the easiest and more relaxing way to whiz about Bangkok is on the BTS Skytrain.
The Skytrain is essentially an elevated fast train. This gives it a very nice overall ‘above the ground’ view of the city.
The BTS runs on 2 lines, the Silom and the Sukhumvit, which both run on the eastern side of the Chao Phraya. They cover much of the central city and its many commercial, residential and tourist areas, with extensions planned to outlying areas. Daily operation hours are between 6:00 am and 12:00 midnight with frequent service throughout the day, increased during rush hours. Fares are between 10-40 bhat and are obviously based on the distance traveled. I found the One-day pass of 120 bhat very useful as it gave me unlimited rides for one entire day.
A typical BTS station consists of two levels - concourse and platform. The concourse provides ticketing facilities and other passenger amenities. The platform is for waiting, boarding and alighting from the train. Please be aware that the train may approach the platform anytime, from any direction. Doors of the trains open and close automatically and beeper sounds will warn you when the doors are about to close, so do stand clear of the door at all times. There are guards at every platform and concourse levels, basically to make sure that passenger traffic runs smoothly.
The ticket machines, are all coin-operated, and would initially may cause some worry among passengers who suddenly find themselves without any coins. Well, fear not, just take your notes and change them at the counters :D
A good comprehensive BTS Route map is over at http://www.bts.co.th/en/map.asp. There are also free BTS maps at some of the stations, do take one and keep it handy.
