Puerto Montt is located in the X region of Chile, also known as the Lake region. It's also a great place to start you Chilean Patagonian tour. The city is not yet over run by Americans and English is limited so keep your translator handy. While many abandon the city and head straight for the more tourist oriented Puerto Varas I preferred staying in the city because it's not so cookie cutter perfect. The city of Puerto Montt has obviously spent a lot of money in beautifying it's coast and it was money well spent. The walking pathway/park is a great way to enjoy a sunny day. And like most all cities in Chile it has a delightful city square near the ocean front with a modern fountain.

On a sunny day you will see a city whizzing with life surrounded by snow capped mountains, colorful fishing boats, and friendly people.

Transportation: Lan Chile offers non-stop flights from Santiago or you can fly there from Argentina. Also, many take the 12 - 14 hour bus trip from Santiago at night and sleep their way to or from Puerto Montt.
