Getting TO/AROUND: From way out of town, it's probably best to go by plane. You'll arrive at Pearson International Airport. I don't know how to get from there to the downtown part of the city though. I find Pearson airport to be a bit confusing when compared to say Schiphol in Amsterdam which is the only other airport I've been to.
If you're living a bit closer to Toronto you can go by bus. I always take the Greyhound bus from Brantford. It's a 10 hour bus ride from New York and an 8 hour bus ride from Montreal. The Greyhound bus terminal is located close to the Eatons Centre.
And of course there's also the train.
Take the subway. It costs $2.25 per ride although from what I've heard, the price will most likely go up. I believe a day pass costs about $7.50. This subway system isn't like New York's which goes everywhere but it's still the easiest way to get around downtown.
There are also streetcars and buses you can take when the subways don't go that way.
