Weclome to the Vatican

by Poohgirl_007 - last update: Sep 9, 2002

Vatican City is the smallest independent sovereign state in the world, and it is located inside Rome (it is howerever independent of the Italian state). The city spreads out to the right of Tiber River and is bounded by Monte Mario to the north and Janiculum to the south. The population is only in the hundreds, but it houses so many important artworks and architecture. This is the home of the Pope, who is also the head of the Apostolic Roman Catholic Church, ahs full legislative executive and judiciary powers. The Vatican's main source of income comes from it's own stamps. It also has its own railroad station, newspaper, the Osservatore Romano, and police force. Main sites in Vatican City include St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museum, as well as the famous Sistine Chapel.
