Benin became the first country in Africa, south of Sahara, that I visited. My penpal, Luc Ebah lives in Cotonou. So I decided I go to visit him and after a few days in Benin both of us travel together to Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Niger. Its one of the best trips I ever made !
I went to Benin by direct plane from Paris. At the airport in Cotonou Luc waited for me. It was quite a shock to get out from the plane and feel the warm winds of the african night. Especially since I had left -15C in Norway. By motorbike we went in to Cotonou and I met Lucs family. They were so nice to me and they gave me my own room to sleep in in their house. |
| | During my stay in Benin we did alot of sightseeing. We visited places like: COTONOU:A must see in town is the big marked called "Grand Marche de Dantokpa". They sell almost everything you can imagine. PORTO NOVO:The interesting museum called "Musee Ethnograpique de Porto Novo" that showed the history of the kings of Porto Novo and "Musee Honme" which is also known as "Palais Royal". It shows how the kings of Africa used to live. Porto Novo was a interesting place to visit and watch the african daily life in the markets, streets, etc. GANVIE:Probably one of the most interesting places in Benin. Just imagine a town with 12000 people, built on wooden sticks far out in the sea... And if you wonder if people there can sit inside their houses and fish trough the window, then yes they can ! GRAND POPO:One day we just wanted to be lazy and we made a trip to Grand Popo. Thats a town 80 kilometers west of Cotonou. This place has nice beaches and a good place for both accomodation and a meal is L'Auberge de Grand Popo. It is located right in front of the beach. |
After some wonderful days in Benin me and my friend Luc started on our trip trough several west african countries. In Cotonou we hired a taxi that was going all the way up to Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso. We left Cotonou in the afternoon and was driving trough the whole night. The bad thing about it was that I couldnt see Benin because of the darkness but still it was so fascinating. We passed small villages were people were sitting around their fireplaces outside their houses, we heard drums playing in the dark african night etc. In the early morning we said goodbye to Benin and crossed into Burkina Faso... | | |
