WELCOME TO ALGERIA

by Narviking - last update: Feb 25, 2004

JUST ARRIVED IN ALGERIA (EL OUED)
I was on a chartertrip to Tunisia in 1992 and decided I wanted to see Algeria as well so I took the bus to the south western tunisian town of Tozeur. From there I got lift on the back of a truck with locals and went across the border to Algeria.
MY ALGERIAN FRIENDS
In Algeria I stay for 5 days in the town EL OUED. It was a very interesting place and for the first time I could see the real Sahara desert. I stay in a hotel called HOTEL LE SOUF. It was a nice place and not too expensive.

The first day in El Oued I met two guys who started talking to me. They ask me were I come from and so on. I told them I was just on a short visit in town. They said that if I wanted I could meet them later and they could show me around in El Oued. I accepted their offer and we met later. Well I just have to say I was very lucky I met these two guys. They came every day to my hotel and we went various places together and they show me the markets, we went out to see the camels in the desert, I was invited home to one of the guys family for dinner etc. These guys never asked me for money or anything. It was real hospitality and I think they just tought it was fun to meet foreigners as I saw no other tourists except two germans during my stay in Algeria.
TAKING A WALK IN THE SAHARA DESERT.
Unfortunately I did not have time to visit other towns in Algeria but my visit to El Oued was a absolutely a big success. I would love to go back but just after I left the country political violence started in Algeria. Islamic groups are now trying to overtrow the government in Algeria and many civilians are being killed in this violence. Also foreigners have been attacked.
I never heard about any violence in El Oued but I wouldnt dare to return there for the time being.
