WELCOME TO AFGHANISTAN !!

by Narviking - last update: Feb 22, 2004

Although I have been to Afghanistan the visit was so short and I saw so little that its nothing to mention here....
Since I was 15 years old I have had a penfriend in Kabul and during my visit to Pakistan I wanted to go and see him and his family. I crossed the frontier at Torkham but just after about two kilometers I decided to return as the road to Kabul was unsafe due to fighting between mujahedin groups...
BUT now the situation in Kabul is getting better and my friends are still there. As various airlines will start flying to Kabul my dream is to visit Afghanistan in a not too distant future. So sooner or later I hope to have a page with more pictures and information about Afghanistan.

THOSE PEOPLE IN THE PHOTO ARE MY FRIENDS IN KABUL...
Parasto used to be one of the most famous singers in Radio and TV of Afghanistan. When the islamic fundamentalists with the help of the USA and other western countries took power in Afghanistan in 1992 she fled and lives now in Germany. Unfortunately even now in 2004 when Taliban has gone women are still not allowed to sing in Afghan TV. The rules against women that was put in effect with the help of the western countries is still there.

In one sence the situation in Afghanistan is tragic comical... It was the USA who gave weapons to their best friends, the islamic fundamentalists, so they could take power in the country. The west didnt bother about the fact that this meant women lost all their rights. No school and education, women who earlier went to the disco was now forced to wear burka, music was banned etc. The list could go on and on. Then suddenly after 9/11 the best friends wasnt so good anymore and everybody cried out about the bad human rights situation in Afghanistan. And that was a situation that the west and especially the USA themselves had helped to create !! The one that suffer from this cynical politics has been the innocent afghan people !!

Jim -- Afghanistan could be such a lovely tourist destination someday if it weren't for the landmines. Your page illustrates a lesson about "unintended consequences"... Cheers, Mark
