Beirut is a modern and interesting city. Parts of it still has damages from the civil war that raged on from 1975 to 1990. However when I was there the reconstruction work went on for full speed and they seem to build a totally new centre of the city. The city is safe to visit but I think its best to stay away from the areas were there are Palestinian refugee camps as I heard that in august 2002 there were some violence in these camps.
