In April 1999, I visited Egypt for the third time in 11 years.I was born in Cairo in 1968 and moved to Montreal in 1988.I started touring Cairo with my cousin John who was born in Toronto and was its first time to Cairo.Cairo is a great city with a lots of sightseeings and actions, from the great pyramids to the crazy way of driving. The Nile river flows in the heart of the city, creating a magnificant view.Cairo has great churches like the "Moalakah" church, and "Abu Serga", Also you must visit the Virgin Mary Church at Zaytoon, where Virigin mary appeared in April1969.The majority of Christians in Egypt belong to the Coptic Orthodox Faith, however you can still find Roman Catholic,Angelican,Aremnian,Greek Orthodox,Syrian Orthodox and other communities in Cairo. There are also many churches for these denominations in Cairo.
You should visit the Coptic Museum in Cairo, also the Saint Mark Cathedral at Abasya where the Coptic Pope "ShenoudaIII" gives his weekly lecture every Wednesday in Arabic.Cairo is a tourist-oriented city, that means locals are used to see and deal w/ tourists.Everyone will be more than happy to help you.It is true you may get bugged w/ merchants trying to sell you their merchandise, but that's normal I find, you can simply say thanks and walk away.Egyptians are generally very kind and willing to help especially the tourists. Most people manage to speak/understand English well enough.Cairo is generally a safe place to be in, however it may be wise for women not to walk at night alone(after 10:00-11:00pm).
