Probably the most visited place in Amsterdam, and probably one of the most sad and read stories about Jewish hiding in Amsterdam from Nazism in II World War. The house is full of tourists always, so to avoid masses get up very early, it opens from 9am-9pm. In case you haven't read the novel I recommend you it, Anne is a sweet and nice girl you will instantly like his innocent way of telling things.

Wander through the most exciting district in Amsterdam. Thousands of girls displaying themselves in the windows. Tourists mix with pimps, drunks, drug dealers... By the way, prostitution was legalised in 1810, but pimping is not legal. If you are a girl, I am sorry, several years ago some men started to stand behind the windows, but no woman dared to enter... Funny urinary the Dutch way: easy and useful, isn't it? Address: North - Sea South - Damstrat / Oude Doelenstraat / Oude Hoogstraat East - Zeedijk/Nieuwmarket / Kloveniersburgwal West - Warmoesstraat

Go to some of the Museums in the museum quarter. Close to Leidseplein. Must go museums I suppose they are: Van Gogh and Rijkmuseum. Rijkmuseum is temporarily closed to public until 2008 due to renovations but you can visit one wing, which contains some of the most important paintings, but not sure if the essential ones to make it worth visiting. Van Gogh is close to Rijkmuseum. 9 euros each museum http://www.rijkmuseum.nlhttp://www.vangoghmuseum.nl

Vondelpark is seen through my eyes with poetry. Is a retreat in the city, a place to dream with equality among people. You can see some local people playing petanque while smoking a joint and drinking a pack of Heineken, or you can see a couple sitting on a bench and having a picnic, or a beggar sleeping in the grass, or a dog swimming in the small lake for his owner stick, or a musician playing flute, or catch a free concert of local music.. To catch a free concert visit Vondelpark site at http://www.openluchttheater.nl

One of the most pleasant activities is wander around street Markets. They are usually open everyday and you can find everything you need. The biggest in city is Albert Cuypmarkt in Albert Cuypstraat, open Monday-Saturday from 9am-5pm. It's not in the city center, but it's a must-see thing for me. You can find there a good choice of restaurants and trendy cafes. You will surely find another markets on your visit, but you may also want to visit Flea Market (9am-5pm, Monday-Friday, 8:30-5:30 Saturday), this one is in the Waterlooplein area (closer to the center, you can take Nieuw Doelenstraat from Rokin-Vijzelstraat-Rokin crossing) and you can take profit and see the Stopera, the incredible building where opera and city hall share the same roof. Incredible, isn't it? The best way to go there is by bike.

It's a hidden retreat in the heart of the city: a former convent and community of Beguines (an order of unmarried or widowed woman who cared old people) from the early 14th century. It's the only 'Little Courtyard' (translation of Hofjes) open to public from 8am-11am. The visiting time was shortened to that times because last year (2003) people was fed up of visitors. Have in mind that those are common people living in his houses so don't disturb. You can enter the small church inside the beginhof and exit the opposite way.

SoulFisher Tue Feb 21, 2006 15:26 UTC No wonder. Amsterdammers are often fed up with everything. There is a British protestant church there, wich had chorus concerts inside. The catholic church (former hidden) is also interesting. | carfan Thu Jun 30, 2005 14:45 UTC Great pages on my fav.city! | travelife Tue Jun 14, 2005 17:37 UTC Plesant readin the Amsterdam page! | LauraWest Mon Jan 31, 2005 01:01 UTC Your Amsterdam information is helpful. I think I'm going there at the beginning of June, as part of my first European vacation. Happy Birthday! Having a birthday on the weekend is a bonus, I say. |
