Spectacular Wine Country

by TRimer - last update: Jun 30, 2007

Oh those wonderful pinotages

Joe with the vines
My now husband originally suggested that we go to California wine country as part of our honeymoon. That was when he was still talking about a month-long trip. So when we were contemplating honeymooning in South Africa, the fact that it had it own wine country made it all the more appealing. So we headed off to our wine store (more like an emporium) in Chicago, made friends with the South African wine buyer and started sampling wines from the regions that we intended on visiting. We became huge fans of pinotages and could not wait to try them out.

The Monument

Driving into wine country from the East of the country made me a little nervous- I am not a huge fan of heights in general but really don't like narrow mountain passes. Arriving in the valley was spectacular. With the white buildings and the mountains in the background- it was postcard worthy. By the time we reached Franschhoek, Joe was tired and cranky from playing 18 holes at Pezula that morning and driving all day and he was none to pleased that I did not know the exact address of our hotel. So after driving down one road and turning around (we soon found out we were 1/2 mile from our hotel) and then driving down the main street we tried to go into the Tourist Info place for directions- only it was closed. So we went into the hotel next door and asked for help. They told us to turn right at the monument. We looking puzzled wondered to ourselves what monument but were too tired to argue. So we got back into our car and wouldn't you know, the Monument is a huge structure and museum in the middle of town. Hard to miss and our joke for the rest of the trip.

Like Napa was in the 1980s
