Cuba is one of the most facinating places that I have been. Yes, I went legally- which had its own trials and tribulations that included a tour guide that spoke little English and did not know the sites, 2+ hours of paperwork in Miami airport, horrible pre-paid food. But, despite this I would recommend to anyone to go BEFORE Castro dies and it changes. |
Bush and Cuba I have received numerous emails asking how as an American citizen I was able to visit Cuba. Until recently, there were a number of ways to get a general license to visit the country. Licenses were issued by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) which is part of the Treasury.
However, under the Bush administration everything has changed. Now you need to get a special license and even family visitation is restricted. To see the changes, check out: http://www.ffrd.org/cuba/june04regs.htm
I guess Americans will just have to wait for another administration to decide that Cuba and Castro is no longer a threat.
The other thing that has changed is the use of US Currency. When I was there, US money was readily accepted - but you could not use US credit cards (i.e. American Express). Now it appears that US money is not welcome and that you will pay a premium for using it. |
