  • Half an hour Vaporetto ride away from St. Marks Square is the quaint fishing village of Burano. The often photographed island (note the pastel colored houses, sometimes justaposed to white laundry) is known for lace making. Great place to spend the afternoon and have a late lunch.

Take Vaporetto #12 from San Marco or #14 from Fondamente Nuove (in Cannaregio). It take about 40 minutes to get there.

  • The island of Torcello. A five minute Vaporetto ride from Burano, this small rustic island is the home to the beautiful Cathedral of Santa Assunta and St. Fosca church. Only about 100 people live on Torcello.

  • One of the most beautiful and fascinating corners of Venice to visit is the Jewish Ghetto. Located in Cannaregio, this is where the Jewish population was confined at the beginning of the 16th century. The area includes 2 synagogues, a holocost memorial and several shops selling judaica.

Churches: Chiesa di Santa Maria della Salute

  • Visit the Santa Maria della Salute Church in Dorsoduro. Built on 100,000 wooden piles, the church occupies a prime position on the Grand Canal. It contains several painting by Titian and Tintoretto. Venetians visit the church once a year on November 21st in memory of the city's deliverance from the plague of 1630.

Santa Maria della Salute is on the opposite side of the Grand Canal from St. Mark's Square, near the triangular tip of the Dorsoduro quarter. If you're visiting the Accademia art gallery or the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Salute is easily to reach on foot from either of those museums.

Murano: Great Source for Murano Glass Jewelry

  • Resist the urge to buy murano glass jewelry on the street. You will see cheap versions everywhere. For better quality (without paying more) visit the shop of Lili e Paolo Darin. They make their own beads. It is near the train station in Cannaregio (not on the island of Murano). The address is A. Geremia 317.

Traci, FANTASTIC Venice page! This should be one of the top 5 pages. Thanks so much for the valuable tips, and one day I hope to be a "vistor" v. "tourist" ~ Helen

I can't read your tips, beacause they are typed too little and in italics. They seems good. Ciao!
