Alkmaar. About an hour on the train from Amsterdam, we visited on a Sunday, most things were closed,and we'd missed the Friday cheese market, but the museum of beer saved the day. It's a smallish place dedicated to the history of brewing and there is a magnificent bar downstairs, guess who stayed far too long?

Volendam. A twenty minute bus ride from CS. It's a pretty village (too pretty maybe) much visited by coaches etc, but well worth a couple of hours. We visited because we'd heard that Volendam were playing football that afternoon, as it happened they played the night before. This happens to me too often but do your research before you go!! Never mind several bars and a good meal kept us entertained.
