Shrines for Castle Lovers

Marktplatz und Genoveva Burg, a smaller Town, halfway between Koblenz and the Nuerburgring, Formula 1 territory!
Mayen is the Center in the Vulcan Eifel, surrounded by rural settlements, smaller farms that is, situated in the Valley of the sedate, but romantic River Nette and the Hills of the Maifeld......great Wine Region.
the Castle, die Genoveva Burg, build 1280 and used as Protection in times of war and unrest.
today it is a Museum. the Tower ca 35 high, has good view over the area, and the castle as such is in very fine nick, beautiful restored to it's former Glory and every year the Castle Festival is held here in Summer.

famous son of Mayen is the german actor MARIO ADORF, he often plays the bad guys, but is in reality a very nice guy!
Mayen is the Gateway to the Eifel Region

during the 1830, when Moritz von Arndt, german writer, went on his Rhein und Ahr Wanderungen (Rhine and Ahr journeys), he had a strange expirience in Muenstereifel. Although the name includes 'eifel', the Innkeeper tried to convince him, on the basis of old documents, that Muenstereifel was only in the 'vicinity' of the Eifel but was in no way in the Eifel.
'Everybody likes to push die Eifel as far away as possible from 'oneself' wrote Arndt, as if this where an unblessed or even forsaken desert'.
there had been a catastrophic famine at the beginning of the 19th Century, people where starving and fled the land, which was once rich with mild climate.
and there is no prove of the deterioration, what had happend. one theory was a Wolfesplaque, but imagine, a few kilometers from Cologne, Wolfes would roam an area as big as Belgium. it is said this plague lasted for 20 years, people where terrified, many left, deserting a once beautiful forest area.
today the Eifel is once again a GEM for tourist from all over the world....have the wolfes gone??
my Grandmother used to tell stories about the forest of the Eifel, the good and skillful people and the mild climate, but also the 'Snow Eifel' one of the remotest corner of the region, we went skiing there, the Alps where to far for us.
the picture shows the earth formation of volcanic residue around Mayen, der Krufter Ofen...a Geologists heaven
if you are interested in this part of Germany, the webpages is a great read and does the region justice.
