  • Currency update-- September 2003...

The money exchange market is still governed by the guys on the street who will run to your car with currency notes... You can buy Afs (the new afghan currency), the Pakistani rupee, or Iranian rials for your Dollars. Dollars seem to be preferred to Euro in this part of the world at least...

    August- September 2002 experience...

There is no official exchange rate, the amount you get for a dollar will jump about from hour to hour.
we got money exchanged at anything between 39,000 afghanis, to 50000 afghanis to the dollar.

The government is introducing new notes- printed in Germany- and they will simply slash away 3 zeroes from the current currency. The afghani notes themselves were printed in three different ways- albeit very similar. Rashid dostums area had one kind, for example.
Within a few weeks the old afghani will be worthless, and people are starting to get rid of the current stock as fast a possible.

Alternative: One tip... the newer-crisper looking your Dollar, the better the rate it is likely to fetch you.

Hi Husain, what a lovely page and discovering for me. Reading "the kite runner" book, I am becoming interested in this part of Asia and thanks to your pages and Luke Powell photography I feel amazed. Many thanks for share with us. Love, Gloria

This is a lovely page on Afghanistan. I'm glad to hear that on your last trip, you saw signs of recovery and stability. It's time for a country that has been through so much, to finally experience peace and prosperity.
