A little over an hours drive out of Kabul to the north, will get you to Istalif. This once prosperous town, with its gardens, streams and lots of trees, used to be a picnic-area for Kabul's inhabitants and had a royal summer-house for Afghanistans last king Zahir Shah.
Its also a terrible reminder of the devastation caused by the long and bitter war fought for the area by the Taliban and the Northern Alliance. Today it lies mostly in ruins. |
