Delhi can cater to all kinds of budgets... from luxury hotels, to basic accomodation in the crowded lanes of Paharganj... which is where a lot of the backpackers head. There are plenty of middle budget hotels and guest houses around town as well, besides the youth hostels. If you are looking to stay in the Paharganj area, you will get a basic room for about rs 500 a day- ie.about $10, with ac and bathroom attached. 'Hotel Namaskar' is a small hotel that seems to be one of the favourites, and the guys who run the hotel offer advice/help to travellers for their general querries. Among the luxury hotels, the Oberoi is one that i think is very good. However, there is a shortage of good middle budget accomodation, since there has been very few new hotels that have come up in the recent past in Delhi and tourism has boomed suddenly. 5 star hotel accomodation costs the earth sometimes, if at all rooms are available. Guest houses, in residential areas, are often a good alternative...
Unique Qualities: For backpackers looking to stay in Paharganj, the obvious alerts would apply. It can be a bit chaotic there and as it always happens, it attracts its share of touts as well.

Built in 1965, it was one of the citys first luxury hotels. The exterior still bears the 60's-70's construction style, but the Oberoi in Delhi is a hotel with a reputaion for its style, service and elegance. The rooms overlook either the greens of the Delhi Golf club, or Humayuns tomb (which is a world heritage site) on the other side. It is not one of your cheaper accomodation options though. The list price ranges from $325 a night for its regular rooms to $1,800 for the Curzon Suite.
Unique Qualities: Baan Thai and Taipan, two of its restaurants, offer some of the finest oriental cuisine in town. Also, the Oberoi has undertaken to light up the adjacent `Humayuns tomb', which is a world heritage monument. The lights come on post sunset and its a fabulous view. The interesting bit is that the monument is closed to visitors after sunset and one of the few places where you can clearly see it lit up from is probably the Oberoi. So its almost like an exclusive vew for its guests!

Unique Qualities: One of Delhi's well known/ established hotels... It has over 450 rooms/ suites, including 2 presidential suites... some suites have their own private gardens. Its a fair bit more expensive than the avarage accomodation option in the city, but if you have the budget and want to pamper yourself a bit, its a good option. The restaurants within the hotel are pretty good too...

A luxury 5 star hotel, with lavish interiors that seem to be inspired from the Mughal era. Very centrally located, its a stones throw away from many of the citys landmarks.

Operated and owned by the Government under the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), the Ashok Hotel is a huge property which is very centrally located but has probably seen better days. Though there has been effort to make several improvements, the government has finally decided to disinvest in the hotel, and infact sell off most of its hotels under ITDC.
Unique Qualities: The hotel houses several shops and also a Sagar Ratna restaurant, which serves good south Indian cuisine, within its premises. Also, many offices of Russian countries- a reminder of days when Indo- Soviet friendship was at its peak...
