Delhi, India's capital city, a city that has seen the rise and fall of several dynasties, and a place i`ve called `home' for nearly 20 years, exists in two time zones... One thats part of the 21st century, and the other that has remained uncanged for hundreds of years. The city is a mix of modern structures that exist alongside monuments that are well over a thousand years old. The history, the culture and now all the rapid changes, reflect to the world where India stands today- at the crossroads- somewhere between the traditional and the modern... and that make Delhi a fascinating city to be a part of. | | Work-in-progress First timers and those who havent visited Delhi in a while, should be prepared to see construction activity all around. Which essentially means lots of digging and construction up along many of the roads. This image hits you right at the start of your visit- from the airport itself. Lots of bridges/ fly-overs etc are being built all over the city. Over crowded roads will eventually/ hopefully make way for smoother flow of traffic. The efforts are paying dividends too... There are signboards which say `please bear with us today, as we work for a better tomorrow'. While most of these projects should have been in place many years ago, its better late than never. And Delhi-ites bear with it patiently, as each new completed phase makes things that one bit easier. Most projects have been planned with a view to having all the cogs in the wheel in place in time for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth games |
| | History Delhi has seen the rise and fall of several empires and is therefore littered with some amazing monuments, which sometimes we almost tend to take for granted and that date from the 1st century AD or earlier, to the days of the British raj. Its a typical scene to see modern buildings exist right beside ones that are over a thousand years old. |
