Try to make your visit too Bangkok in connection with a weekend and go see the weekend market. It's about one hour and 1 US cent with the local bus from the Hulamphong area. More conveniently it's alsoo possible too take the skytrain. About 10 - 15 min. from the main station ( approx. 1,75 USD). Aircoonditioned and lots of space as the locals in general can't afford this transportation. ( In fact the skytrain has only been opened for a few months. During my first visit to Bangkok in 96, it all looked nearly done. Apparently - the project has been delayed for many years )
The weekend market can offer everything from second hand clothes too rice boilers and live chicken, aquarium fish, pet squirrels and lizards, pet grooming, flower arrangements ( fake and real ), watches and clocks - eg. anything you can imagine. Don't be claustrofobic though, 'cause you walk through really narrow alleys and with loads of people. In other words pay also good attention to your valuebles or bring only what you can afford to loose.
