The Golden Temple at Dambulla in Sri Lanka

I’d read the guidebooks and had enough preventative jabs to give me a sore arm for a week but nothing could prepare me for the sheer jaw-dropping beauty of this country. ‘Sri Lanka’ literally means beautiful island and so it proved to be.

I decided to book on an organised tour which enabled me to stay in three different bases - Habarana, Kandy and Bentota and get to see plenty of the sights whilst not forgetting the aim of the holiday - relaxation. Being just a stone’s throw from the equator the climate is warm to hot all year round , perfect for a winter escape from Northern Europe (London in my case). The vegetation is lush and verdant due to the monsoon rainfall and there is a great variety of wildlife ranging from elephants and monkeys to millipedes and ants.

Sri Lanka is in the process of putting its recent troubles behind it. Everyone we met was very warm and welcoming; an indication of a country making a great effort to regenerate its tourist industry.
