Ho Chi Minh City

by Jim_Eliason - last update: Oct 31, 2004

The main tourism industry of Saigon is the war. The party officials seem to relish the chance to rub America's nose in it a little. The view of the war given is very one sided. On the other hand, the city itself tells a different story. Much of the city seems to look just like it would have 30 years ago except with another 30 years of decay. It says something about the Communist rule that 30 years later the main attraction of the city is still the American war and the French Architecture. Fortunately things are starting to change with the recent introduction of capitalism but Vietnam still has a long ways to go before it sees the gains you see in China. But that is one reason to go now! This is the one place I have been to where there are no McDonalds or KFCs. The first KFC is being constructed right now so you had better hurry.

Thanks for your visit to Tripoli, Jim. I was in Saigon (sorry HCM) in 1998, and liked it a lot. Colonial architecture is outstanding in Vietnam; ah, Hotel de ville is not a hotel: it is the city hall (former city hall here).

Saigon looks like a fascinating city. It and Vietnam are high on my list of places to see someday. BTW, thanks for checking out my IL page.

Hi Jim, thanks for visiting Hoi An VT page. I am still in the midst of updating my Hue page - want to complete my central vietnam page. I love Vietnam and I was surprised that I didn't visit that many places like you when I was in Saigon. Great write-up!
