Magical Færoes

by davidcross - last update: Aug 21, 2008

Torshavn

Why?

Why are you going there? What do you expect to do there? These were the questions we were frequently asked - so frequently that I came to envisage a fog and rain bound holiday with limited museums and no outdoor visibility. Even now I have to recognise that this might epitomise some people's visits.
So WHY?
Simple. A friend had been 4 years ago and raved about the Færoes. She was going again and taking a house. At one stage she thought that she would have 10 days on her own and invited us to join her for that time. As I said to questioners 'You don't say no, do you?'

Getting there

Our friend was staying in the island capital, Torshaven. We flew with SAS from Manchester to Copenhagen and then flew with Atlantic Airways, the Færoes own, to Vagur, the airport for the Færoes.
From there we took the bus through mountains and tunnels to Torshavn, where we were met and taken to the apartment - ground floor and large.

Some general reflections

It would be possible to do it more cheaply - by ship (Norruner) run by Smyril, again the Færoes own - from the North of Scotland - and staying in hostels. However, if you are intent upon a cheap holiday, this is hardly the place for you! Iceland is well known for its expense and people returning from Iceland to England via the Færoes reckoned that Iceland is cheaper.

The Færoes are an autonomous province of Denmark but enjoy seperate representation on the Nordic Council. It seems that a small majority is in favour of complete independence and perhaps Torshavn is destined to become the world's smallest capital.

I view the thought of starting on tips with some acute misgivings. I doubt I have the vocabulary to get over not just the extreme beauty of these islands but, more so, their difference from other places and, most of all, the great differences between the islands and villages within the Færoes.

I am still in Torshavn now and I shall wait until I get home.
