Long gap - revisits and new sites I did not expect to be writing about Córdoba although it's my favourite Spanish city. I assumed everything worth saying would have been said but, after a long time looking I find there is nothing on two of the sites I visited this time and very little on a third. My previous visits to Córdoba were in 1989, 1991 and 1994 so it had been a long gap. I was relieved and delighted that I found the same sense of contentment at being in Córdoba this time. |
The Mezquita Anyone who goes to Córdoba infrequently and does not go to the mosque is, from my perspective, missing a cylinder. This and Granada's Alhambra are, for me, Spain's top Moorish sights. I loved this visit quite as much as my earlier ones. Although the cathedral embodies the best craftsmanship of its time, I regard it as an architectural abomination because it destroyed part of the fabulous mosque. I shall cover the Mezquita in a travelogue. |
New to me The square shown was my only other planned revisit. I had heard that it had been considerably improved - and how true that is. It was almost a cause for tears before, potentially fine but terribly run down. The places new to me, some of which justify a travelogue, were Medina Azahara [or Medinat Al-Zahra as they seem to prefer now] which I shall put as a mustsee as it's much easier to visit than it was, the Museo Archeológico, the Jardín Botánico and the Patios of the Palacio del Marqués de Viana. |
