During the Golden Week vacation in May, a friend and I went to Hiroshima for some sightseeing - for a change!

The weather was beautiful, sunny and mild. Our first impression was how clean, wide and green the streets were. Hiroshima's present layout was <i>designed</i>, when the city had to rebuild itself from the ashes of the atomic bomb dropped on it on August 6 1945.

We did all the touristy things of course. Visited the atomic dome and the museum, the peace park. Sharing these meditative moments with excited junior high school students all eager to practice their English (on my <i>German</i> friend!).

The highlights were Shukkeien Garden, eating okonomyaki, shopping (so much cheaper than Kyoto!!) and just simply relaxing by the river (here is my laziness showing again...).

Japanese change a lot. They used to think that the foreigner should speak their language in Japan in the past. Now they are learning the English eagerly as the other Asians.
