Getting TO/AROUND: The subway. The Karasuma Line runs through the heart of the city and tourist use it mainly from Kyoto Station. It takes only about 1-2 minutes to get from one stop to the next. The cost depends on how many stops you go, about 230Yen.

Getting TO/AROUND: Taxis are expensive... but sometimes convenient. From Kyoto Station to the city center is a 5-10minute ride and costs about 600Yen. The big black ones are more comfortable and don't cost any more!

Getting TO/AROUND: In front of kyoto station is this automatic INFORMATION booth. It is in Japanese and English and contains transport information for all the major sites. In this case we were going to Kiyomizu Temple. A few buttons away we knew exactly which bus we had to get, at which stop and where to get off. Wish they had this all over Kyoto and not just at the main station.

Getting TO/AROUND: pay 70dollars each for this!?! I tried this in Nara, but it was about half the price. The guys pulling you along dont speak English, which can be a good thing as ours talked our ear off and I saw other Japanese tourists suffering in the same way. They seem to be enjoying themselves though...

Getting TO/AROUND: * Since May 17, 2002 the Shinpuhkan is also operating the new Velo Taxi - bicycle taxis imported from and based on those running in Berlin. No Velo taxis run during February and March otherwise they operate from 1-5pm and can be waved down anywhere in central Kyoto namely around the following streets: Karasuma, Ayanokouji, Teramachi and Oike. Cost is 300Yen per adult, 200Yen for children aged 2-6.
