St. John the Theologian (the apostle) was exiled to the island of Patmos. In a cave he had a vision, this vision was the source for the book of the Revelation which he dictated to St. Prochoros. Later the Roman emperor who had exiled St. John to Patmos died, so St. John could return to Efesos. As a souvenir for the people of Patmos he wrote the Gospel.
