Η Θεσσαλονίκη ιδρύθηκε την Ελληνιστική περίοδο από τον Κάσσανδρο, τον στρατηγό του Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου. "Θεσσαλονίκη" λεγόταν η γυναίκα του Κασσάνδρου, η αδελφή του Αλεξάνδρου.
Thessaloniki was founded in the Hellenistic period by Kassander, Alexander the Great's general. "Thessaloniki" was the name of Kassander's wife, Alexander's sister.
Μετά τον θάνατο του Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου ο Κάσσανδρος ήθελε να γίνει διάδοχός του. Σκότωσε τους συγγενείς του Αλεξάνδρου εκτός από την αδελφή του την Θεσσαλονίκη την οποία παντρεύτηκε.
After Alexander the Great's death Kassander wanted to become his successor. He killed Alexander's relatives except of his sister Thessaloniki, whom he married.
Πριν από την ίδρυση της πόλης υπήρχαν μερικοί οικισμοί στην περιοχή αυτή. Όταν ιδρύθηκε η Θεσσαλονίκη, ο κόσμος έφυγε από τους προελληνιστικούς οικισμούς και πήγε στην νέα πόλη Θεσσαλονίκη που μέχρι τον 20ο αιώνα τελείωνε στα τείχη που μπορείτε να δείτε ακόμα και σήμερα. Έτσι η Θεσσαλονίκη ήταν το σημερινό Κέντρο Πόλεως και η Άνω Πόλη.
Before the foundation of the city there were some settlements in the region. When Thessaloniki was founded, people left the pre-Hellenistic settlements and went to the new town Thessaloniki, which until the 20th century ended at the fortification walls you can still see today. So Thessaloniki consisted of today's Centre of the City and the Upper Town.
