Fondest Memory: The Reiskrater is the German name for the gigantic meteor crater that the village of Nördlingen was built inside of... The crater itself is an stunning 39 kilometers (24 miles) wide in diameter! Presented here, another view off to the horizon of the crater rim, as seen from the church tower at the center of town...

General Tips: View of the crater's rim
Tip Rating: |
Fondest Memory: Be sure to visit Nördlingen on a clear day in order to get the most optimal view of the rim of the crater... I went during the summer and I think I managed a pretty fair view, but could have been even better on a completely cloudless day... Keep in mind the viewing platform is a very tiny thin balcony that surrounds the church tower and when there's a lot of people it can be quite difficult to squeeze through to the opposite sides to get the full 360° view...

General Tips: Guard Towers
Tip Rating: |
Fondest Memory: From the church tower viewing platform at the center of town, you can also see the various towers that guard the entrances to the town. Nördlingen is one of the few remaining German towns that still has a complete wall protecting it, all the way around the periphery of the village, and the towers are positioned along the wall...

General Tips: Town walls.
Tip Rating: |
Fondest Memory: Here is a view I captured of the Nördlingen town wall as viewed from the outside, looking upwards... As you can see, this part of the wall is completely covered in a splendorous foliage of green hanging plants...! The entire length of the wall can be walked, a distance of well over one kilometer...

General Tips: Church Tower Interior
Tip Rating: |
Fondest Memory: Here are some of the old-fashioned mechanisms you will see as you are climbing the old tower of the church at the center of Nördlingen... The church is called the Church of Saint George and the tower is referred to as the Danielturm...

General Tips: Church tower graffiti
Tip Rating: |
Fondest Memory: As you are climbing the steps of the church tower, here is some of the rather banal graffiti you will see... Well, I suppose one can agree with the anti-racist sentiment while disdaining the grammatical style and haphazard vandalism... I'm not sure why some of the admission proceeds can't be used to clean this stuff up...

General Tips: Church tower apex/Rathaus view
Tip Rating: |
Fondest Memory: To attain the apex of the church tower, you will need to ascend about 90 meters into the air, a distance of some 366 steps... Here is another view from the top, this time focusing a little closer to the church tower, at the old Gothic town hall called the Rathaus...

General Tips: The Rathaus
Tip Rating: |
Fondest Memory: Pictured here, the information plaque that you will see attached to the wall of the Nördlingen town hall, referred to as the Rathaus... The Rathaus is a classic example of Bavarian Gothic architecture, almost like something out Grimm's Hansel and Gretel... It is located right next to the Church of Saint George, at the center of town...

General Tips: Nördlingen sidewalk cafes
Tip Rating: |
Fondest Memory: There are quite a number of attractive sidewalk cafes throughout the village of Nördlingen where you can order a meal, some snacks, or a cold beer... This particular cafe is located just near the church tower as seen in this shot from the viewing platform...

General Tips: Gasthof
Tip Rating: |
Fondest Memory: Here is a detail shot of the Gasthof zum Fuchs... The term gasthof can be translated as guest house, but here they also have a sidewalk cafe and restaurant where you can get Swabian cuisine, as well as good German beer... I'm not much of a connoisseur of German cuisines, although I do like brats and a glass of spicy Gewurztraminer wine once in a while...

Rhondaj Tue May 5, 2009 15:13 UTC Interesting page! :-) | we2364 Sun Apr 6, 2008 15:47 UTC My fan, you should find the complete update of all magical encounters and tell ^_*! | kschatterbox Wed Apr 11, 2007 13:51 UTC Nordlingen Looks like a great place to visit. Its sad to see the graffiti on The Church Tower, you would think they want to clean it up! Would love to see the Rieskrater Museum. Great page you have here :) | andal13 Thu Feb 12, 2004 19:54 UTC Very curious place... a town inside a crater! Where does NOT live a human being? |
