The Moorish style architecture that surrounds this large public square was actually designed not so long ago by British architects who wanted to recreate an Andalusian fantasy world of epic proportions, harkening back to the golden era when Spain was dominated by Islamic conquistadors... I have to admit, the effect works really well, and especially at night when the buildings are lit up... In this photo, KL tower can be seen off in the distance, on the right hand side...

Another stunning piece of Kuala Lumpur's classical Moorish architecture, part of a vogue of neo-Moorish design that was brought in by British architects around the 19th century... I like the Moorish aesthetic a great deal, reminds one of the Arabian Nights fantasies and that kind of thing... The towers could serve not only as a protected lookout post for military purposes, but also would make an excellent place to imprison and subjugate a whole assortment of exotic Rebeccas and Rapunzels, as was the custom in the Middle Ages...

Also called Masjid Negara, the National Mosque is expansive with a very ultra-modern design aesthetic... I made a visit here with VT member "Jillworld" during my trip to southeast Asia in January of 2002... I generally prefer more traditional mosque architecture such as that of the stunning El Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem so I was not especially impressed with this one although it is interesting to compare the aesthetics...

Elegantly designed in polished stainless steel, these were the tallest habitable buildings in the known universe as of my first visit to Kuala Lumpur. But although they were the tallest in the world, the general public was not allowed to visit the top floor and instead must access a viewing platform around the midway point of the towers, allowing only an inferior view of the city... Nowadays, Petronas Towers are no longer the tallest in the world. Nevertheless, a magnificent work of architecture, and one of the mustest of must sees in Kuala Lumpur...

Little India is a fantastic place to get a bite to eat... Some very tasty Indian cuisine is available and at extremely cheap prices... In addition, you get to mix in with Kuala Lumpur's Indian population who hail primarily from South India...! There are also clothing stores selling a wide variety of traditional and modern Indian fashions. I went here for a lunch with VT member "Jillworld" and we loved it... Don't miss it!

Located immediately adjacent to the colossal Petronas Towers, KLCC Shopping Center is the place for all your upscale shopping needs... Versace, Chanel, etc, etc, all the biggest international brands are here... This is the only place I know in KL where you can find a truly western style shopping experience. Ranks alongside the best upscale malls in the world... Posing in this photo alongside Singaporean VTer "imstress" and her husband, who we met here completely by chance...!

Sri Mahamariamman Temple, located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur's fabulous Chinatown district, is an absolutely gorgeous example of Hindu temple architecture that is not to be missed. The structure is decorated with many colorful statuettes such as the one pictured here. This temple is a very active center of worship. The usual provisos apply, take off shoes before entering, etc...

Bukit Bintang is a district in central Kuala Lumpur that has many options for dining, accomodations and nightlife, including a sort of mini-chinatown around Jalan Alor. There are numerous hotels and guesthouses in a wide range of prices, as well as some shopping centers, coffee shops and cafes that are popular with locals and foreigners alike... Pictured here, Xiujuan and XingXing pose during a breakfast in Bukit Bintang...
