Things To Do: Eastern Temple Group.
  • Tip Rating:
  • This group of temples, which is closer to the old Khajuraho village, includes three Brahmanical temples and three Jain temples (which were most likely originally Hindu temples)...

Pictured here is a low-angle view of one of the Brahmanical temples with the stunning celestial backdrop...

Things To Do: Western temple group.
  • Tip Rating:
  • The western group of temples is the largest group in Khajuraho. Most of them are dedicated to Shiva or Vishnu, but there is one that is dedicated to the sun god. There is an admission fee which must be paid to enter this group of temples. The grounds are splendidly manicured...

Things To Do: Women of the Chandela dynasty.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Pictured here, one of the most dominating motifs of Khajuraho, the Surasundaris! These are beautiful maidens representing musicians, dancers, handmaidens, and other women of the celestial realm... They are usually shown bare-breasted and sometimes wearing a sari on the lower half....

    Things To Do: Musicians.
  • Tip Rating:
  • A variety of different musical instruments were used by the Chandelas including percussion, string and wind instruments. Women generally preferred to play the flute, no doubt for its obvious metamusical connotations...

The image here shows a female floutist with a drummer at her immediate right hand side...

    Things To Do: Female floutist.
  • Tip Rating:
  • This close-up of the female floutist also details one of the lovely and creative hairstyles favored by the Chandela women as well as their taste in bracelets and other such adornments... This sculpture gives me an impression of a group of people with tremendous creativity, a great passion for music, the arts, and sexuality...

Things To Do: Male floutist and female companion.
  • Tip Rating:
  • "Tantra says, in the sex act be meditative. Feel the whole phenomenon as holy, do not feel guilty. Rather, feel blessed that nature has given you one source through which you can go deep into ecstasy immediately. And then, be totally free in it. Do not repress, do not resist. Let the sexual communion take hold of you. Forget yourself, throw all your inhibitions. Be absolutely natural, and then you will feel a deep music in the body."

Things To Do: Couple and woman.
  • Tip Rating:
  • The ruins of Khajuraho were rediscovered in 1838 by Captain T.S. Burt, a British Engineer. On the recommendation of one of his palanquin bearers, he decided to take a detour from his usual route, and chanced upon the temple ruins... He recorded that in his opinion, the temples were "extremely indecent and offensive."

    Things To Do: Uncanny being.
  • Tip Rating:
  • This surreal and uncanny being is actually one of the manifestations of Vishnu the preserver (one of the three principal Hindu deities). In this form, Vishnu is represented as half man, half boar and is referred to as "Varaha"... This version of Vishnu is interesting, but personally, I much prefer Vishnu's manifestation as Krishna...

    Things To Do: Shiva...?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Not entirely sure, but this may in fact be a representation of the Hindu deity Shiva, considered a conqueror of death, and the vehicle of cosmic dissolution. He is sometimes pictured with multiple arms, and holding a trident, like the figure here... Shiva's wives include Parvati, Durga and Kali, who are all manifestations of each other and temper Shiva's destructiveness, each according to her nature...

    Things To Do: Disfigured lovers.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Time and the elements seem to have conspired to erode away the once beautiful faces of these two amorous lovers, teaching once again the irrefutable lesson that nothing in this world has permanence. Beauty and ugliness are merely illusions of the mind, transient and unlasting...
