The legend says that the beautiful young princess Hemavati, while bathing at night, attracted the attentions of the moon god Chandra, who, in the guise of a handsome young man, seduced her. From their sacred union came the line of the Chandelas... A very consonant and becoming legend of origins for the people of ancient Khajuraho...

    • Favorite Thing: Apart from all the fascinating sculptures that can be studied at Khajuraho, the temples themselves are quite beautiful when viewed as a whole, their golden stones contrasting brilliantly against the luminescent blue of the Indian sky...

    The photo here shows one of the more prominent temples of the Eastern group...

    • Fondest Memory: The name "Khajuraho" derives from the word "khajur", meaning "date palm", referring to the trees that grew in great abundance in this region...

    In previous eras of history, the region had been called "Vatsa" and "Jejabhukti". But during the time of the Chandela dynasty, muslim scholars and chroniclers called it "Khajuraha", leading forth to its current name...

    • Favorite Thing: You will travel and you will see the "wonders" of the world... The Great Pyramids... The Great Wall of China... Or you will see the various natural wonders... Mountains... Oceans... Volcanos... Rain forests... Then again, you will visit the great cosmopolitan centers... Paris, Hong Kong, New York, Rio de Janeiro... But there are a few places in the world that transcend all these things... And provide something far beyond the ordinary... I am thinking of places like Ubud and Ojai and Samothraki... and Khajuraho...!

    • Fondest Memory: The most famous images from Khajuraho's temples feature people who are generally not wearing anything at all, but when they are clothed, they will often have elegant outfits such as that of the gentleman shown in this picture... I really love this fashion aesthetic... We need one of the big famous fashion designers to take a trip out here and rekindle the Chandela vogue...! If anyone knows Vivienne Tam or Issey Miyake, let's get them working on this...

    • Favorite Thing: The huge snout shown here is that of the great Hindu deity Vishnu, represented here in his manifestation as the boar (vishwa varaha, his third incarnation)...

    This sculpture is located at the Varaha temple and has 674 mini-sculptures carved onto it!
