Off The Beaten Path: Samothraki waterfalls and plunge pools

The ice cold waters of Samothraki's many waterfall supplied cold plunge pools are invigorating and refreshing! There are many of them throughout the island, such as along the River Fonias, and near the town of Therma. Be prepared because there is often considerable hiking and rock climbing involved in getting to the various pools. Each one is so unique and lovely in its own special way... This pic shows me diving into the second plunge pool of the River Fonias...

Off The Beaten Path: La Defense

La Defense is a futuristic business district that lies just to the west of Paris. You won't find skyscrapers in Paris (apart from the Tour Montparnasse which most French people despise) but you will find plenty of beautiful ones out here. Everything centers around the Grande Arche de la Defense which is similar to the Arc de Triomphe except much bigger, much more futuristic and much more minimalist in design... Shown here, a gigantic sculpture by Joan Miro, on display at La Defense...

This small but lovely Russian public park just behind Yusupov Palace in St. Petersburg is one of the places that Raskolnikov passes on the murder route in "Crime and Punishment". In the book, it is used in such passages as, "But, I say, I’ve been told Berg is going up in a great balloon next Sunday from the Yusupov Garden and will take up passengers at a fee. Is it true?” And also, "We are going to the Yusupov garden and then to the Palais de Crystal."

Among many fascinating experiments conducted at CERN, most notable was the first ever creation of antimatter in 1995. The photo here shows a map of the giant underground LEP accelerator superimposed on a map of the Geneva region...
