Praia do Camilo

This is Camilo beach, a small beach with lots of steps in his high staircase, but it's worth the effort.
All the coast line is garnish with several beaches. If you can see trought the rocks in front, you will see after Camilo, the D. Ana beach and Pinhão beach. Then, Students beach and Batata beach.
It follows the Lagos Port, the long pavement, good for nice on foot promenades side by side the water, then the Lagos modern Marina, and after that the long beach Meia Praia, the one we see at the background of this picture.
Before this Camilo beach, there is the cape Ponta da Piedade with it lighthouse, and after some rocks the Luz beach.
Behind the Meia Praia beach we saw a small mountain, Monchique, very pleasant when, in hot summer days we prefer the shadow of trees.

This ia a poem about Lagos written by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, who has been recently awarded by the title Rainha Sofia.
LAGOS I

Aceitar o confuso o disforme a ocultação

And another one:

LAGOS II
I
Lagos onde reenventei o mundo num verão ido
Lagos onde encontrei
Uma nova forma do visível sem memória
Clara como a cal concreta como a cal
Lagos onde aprendi a viver rente
Ao instante mais nítido e recente

Lagos que digo como passado agora
Como verão ido absurdamente ausente
Quase estranho a mim e nunca tido

II

IV
Ou poderemos Abril ter perdido
O dia inicial inteiro e limpo

Slave Market at night

Many years ago, since 1444 africans were sold here! The first floor was used as a Military Prision, Guard House and Customs House. This Slave Market is of a great importance in popular tradition, since it is known that the first market that sold slaves brought by caravels from Africa was held in Rossio da Trindade, at Porta da Vila, a place nearby.

Now it's a place for several paintings exibitions.

Praia da Luz

Around 2000 BC Lagos was called “Lacobriga”, which mean Lake of Brigo (the King at that time), you may see, by the picture, the reason. And this is no lake, this is the Atlantic Ocean!
It was captured from the Moors in 1189 but it was not until 1249 that it was finally claimed by Dom Afonso III and integrated into the kingdom of the Algarve. This historic town has played an important part in the story of discovery and conquering the rest of the world. It was from this very harbor that Vasco da Gama sailed in 1499 on his historic and epic discovery voyage. It was the capital of the Algarve from 1578 until 1756 and there remain several ancient buildings to testify to its historic glory. From its port maritime expeditions were embarked upon to discover the world at the orders of Prince Henry the Navigator. Also, the armada of 800 vessels led by the ill-fated heir to the throne Dom Sebastião embarked from Lagos in 1578 to capture the town of Ceuta in Morocco.
