I've lived in Philadelphia since 1990 and loved every single pigeon-infested minute of it! Philadelphia is a large city, but there is a small town feel, thanks in part to the neighborhood structure. This is a really wonderful place to live, and a fun place to visit!
Philadelphia gets a bad rap -- we have, in the past, been voted one of the unfriendliest cities in the U.S. People constantly call it "Filthadelphia". As you might know, Philadelphia is the "City of Brotherly Love"....while I would not go so far as to say that Philadelphians live up to that standard, we are far from being unfriendly! Philadelphia is a city full of working class people, rabid sports fans, and great spirit.
Most tourists see very little of Philadelphia, which I suppose can be said of any tourist mecca. Many see Center City, Olde City, and Society Hill and maybe throw in a side trip to see South Street, which is the border between Society Hill and Queens Village. Yes, these are the nicest areas of the city, but it's not where the flavor is. Go to North Philly for some soul food or to Kensington for some perogies....try hitting South Philly for the Italian Market. There are great things to do all over the city!
