Santos - The city where I born, grew and almost got older. Here I went to school, made friends for life. Where my family have roots and where I can call home.
Santos is one of the oldest cities in Brazil, therefore historic, but cosmopolitan, too. Santos population started around 1540 and its past brought and left a legacy of beautiful, historical mansions, museums, churches and with a great emphasis to the Official Coffe Stock Exchange (seen in the picture), the wealthy mark of Santos.
Acknowleged as a Village in 1545, Santos has its foundation related with the arrive of the first Portugueses in Brazil. In this expedition came Martim Afonso de Souza. Among them was a Portuguese called Braz Cubas, the official founder of the City of Santos. Santos harbor, the largest Port Complex of Latin American, was built in the begining of XX century.
And through this port thousands of imigrants from all over the world came through. Japaneses, Italians, Germans and others. Land of Kindness and Freedom.
The Historic Center of Santos, shelters rich architectural buildings, squares, streets and alleys. One of the most important archicterual group among the ones that still exist in Brazil. From the simple colonial style to the most complex barroque elangance, the Victorian austerity to the sumptuous neoclassic style, a diversity that are present in most of the façades in the historic Santos.
At last, but certainly not least, Santos is a city replete of cultural monuments, museums and art. Santos is always prepared to received tourist year around. Not because it is the city that I born, but because of its history, beaches, gardens, friendly people, entertainment.
Plus, to say that you are "Santista" where Pele, King of Soccer started his career and the soccer team for which he became an acclaimed player,Santos Futebol Clube, I have to say that I am very proud to belong to this East Coast city. |
